Government races to complete projects

The Kenya Kwanza government is in top gear to complete projects worth billions of shillings in different parts of the Country to benefit communities.

The projects include roads, affordable housing programme (AHP), enhanced social protection (ESP) markets, water and last miles power connections among other life changing programmes.

In Migori County, the National Government is moving fast to finish important roads and most importantly, the affordable housing project at Mabera market in Kuria West Sub – County.

The project to gobble Sh187, 158,911.56 when fully complete is a 60 units block and is currently 95 percent finished.

A progress status report prepared from the Nyanza Region’s office of the President’s project delivery unit (PDU) indicates that the project was supposed to have been completed by September 6, 2024.

The report which also requires heads of ministries, department, agencies (MDAs) and semi-autonomous government agencies (SAGAs) to submit lists of all stalled projects, ongoing projects, completed projects pending commissioning and those in need of interventions, was availed to the press by the Nyanza PDU director Mr. Melkizedeck Onguso.

The construction of the Mabera AHP project was started on October 6, 2023 but has delayed by seven months now, according to the indicated details in the report.

Apart from the Mabera AHP, the region has also proposals to construct similar housing blocks developments in Rongo and Kehancha, towns to cost a total of Sh1, 105,034,867. Tenders are already awarded.

The whole initiative, chaperoned by the ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, under the state Department for Housing and Urban Development, would avail to members of the public a total of 514 affordable housing units in Migori County alone when the programme comes to an end, supposedly within the next 3 years.

Some specific projects that are ongoing within the region to create impact on the local peoples’ social, economic and or administrative life in line with the Kenya Kwanza regime’s policy of bottom-up economic transformation agenda (BETA) include the construction of the ESP markets at Sibuoche, Oria, Ranen, Ntimaru, Nyabohanse and Riosir, which are at 44, 45,36,28,25 and 70 percent complete respectively.

“We are very happy with the many programmes and projects that the government is funding in this region. Our only worry is the time they are taking to complete,” said John Ologi a resident of Rongo Constituency.

He wants the government to reprimand and punish contractors who are dragging their feet in doing their works and delay in handing the projects to their clients.

Mrs. Joyce Okello is elated by the numerous projects that are being implemented especially in her area of Uriri and the entire County, where almost every sphere of her life is being touched by the running projects and programmes.

In the education sector, the county is benefiting from the National Government support towards the construction and improvement of technical and vocational education and training colleges (TVETs) where billions of shillings are being disbursed towards this course.

Work for Kegonga water and sanitation project in Kuria East.

For instance, a total of Sh86,848,072 is to be spent in the construction of Siala Technical Training institute to implement civil, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and finishing works at a hospitality block at the institute. The work was supposed to end on October 26, 2024.

The project jointly funded by GoK and AFDB would also use another Sh.6, 349,870 towards the installation and commissioning of an LPG kit and associated building at the college.

Similar initiatives that the Kenya Kwanza led regime is racing to complete, though already past the scheduled times, are the ongoing project works at Oyani TVET in Uriri constituency and ongoing works at Kakrao college.

In the water sector, the state is spot on to complete the Sh1.5 billion Kegonga cluster water and sanitation project in Kuria east constituency, whose work was re-energized by the Interior Principal Secretary (PS) Dr. Raymond Omolo’s visit late December last year.

Two Solar powered-high masts floodlight worth Sh14,192, 201.are also under construction at 20 percent and 5 percent completion at Manyera in Suna West constituency and at Keresi/Oruba Catholic Church respectively, which the state is rushing to complete alongside two other similar high-mast floodlights in Awendo constituency.

The National Government is also doing everything possible to complete the up-grading to bitumen of various roads within the region, including the Stella-Sibuoche-Gogo road, Mapera-Rabuor road and Kanyawanga Dede Road.

The spirit is also high in completing up-coming health facilities like the Piny Owacho level 3 hospital whose foundation was laid by President Dr. William Ruto on 8th October 2023.

Migori County Commissioner Kisilu Mutua confirms the government’s commitment to completing all the initiated projects and programmes, including those stalled many years ago.

‘Under Executive Order No.2 of 2023 (November, 2023) and revised guidelines on the framework for coordination and supervision of Government operations and business across ministries, state departments and agencies dated 16th April, 2024, you are required to submit a report as per the provided template on all stalled projects, ongoing projects, completed projects pending commissioning….,” reads part of a letter sent to heads of MDAs and SAGAs in charge of projects and programmes ongoing within the  area.

The letter instructing the implementing authorities of the area projects was filed to the recipients late March,2025 and majorly expected the officials to upraise the CC’s office on the statuses of all projects under them in order for the government to fast-truck the completion of all the projects and programmes running in the area.
