The government has identified sports as a viable option for creating gainful employment for youths in the country.
The Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Performance and Delivery Management in the Executive Office of the President Eliud Owalo has said the government is investing billions of shillings in improving sports infrastructure to enable talented youths across the country to horn their skills.
Speaking at Vihiga Friends High School, while donating 30 training kits to Vihiga United, Owalo said towards this end, for the western region, the government has already constructed Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega County and Kanduyi stadium in Bungoma.
The Deputy Chief of Staff also disclosed government plans to build other stadiums in Busia and Vihiga counties.
Owalo further promised to get Vihiga united a bus and sponsor before the end of the season.
He was accompanied by the former Vihiga governor Moses Akaranga and the county women representative Beatrice Adagala.
Addressing the gathering, Owalo, who is also a former Cabinet Sectary said, ” Sports is a multibillion industry; stay disciplined, train hard and always be patient.”
He also called on corporate institutions to invest in non- institutional clubs as the best way of promoting sports.
“Institutions have no business starting football teams. Such teams have a good following, but non institutional clubs will provide a ready market for their goods and services through their respective fan base,” said Owalo.
Meanwhile, through Eliud Owalo Foundation, the Deputy Chief of Staff has so far donated training kits to Kakamega Home boys, Nzoia Sugar FC and other grassroots teams.
