Government distributes food aid to Muslim community in Kitui

The Muslim community in Kitui County has received assorted food aid commodities from the national government in efforts to alleviate possible threats of food shortages during the holy month of Ramadhan.

The food aid which included 310 (50kg) bags of rice and 268 (50kg) bags of beans, was distributed to all Muslims across the county.

Kitui County Commissioner (CC) Kipchumba Ruto while presiding over the food aid distribution ceremony held at Manyenyoni chief’s office in Kitui town, said that the donation aims to ensure that fasting Muslims have access to adequate food as well as reduce threats of possible food shortages during the holy period.

The County Commissioner who is also chairman of the county security committee, assured the county residents of calm and peace and commended residents over prevailing peace especially in border communities along the borders of Kitui County, Tana River and Garissa Counties.

He added that the government has beefed up security along the notoriously insecure border areas after recruitment and deployment of over 300 Kenya Police Reservists (KPR) in affected zones.

In their response to the food aid, local Muslim leaders and beneficiaries welcomed the national government’s gesture and expressed their unwavering gratitude for the much-needed food support.

“We are extremely grateful to the government for recognising and supplementing efforts to meet our food needs during this sacred period. This food will help many needy Muslim families during this holy month,” Muhammed Hassan, a local county Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) official said.

Also speaking during the ceremony, a local Muslim community leader, Mariamu Muhamud called upon more well-wishers to step in and as well support Muslim families in need of the food aid.

“This is a time for generosity. Any form of assistance whether it is from individuals or even organizations, is very welcome so we can help the struggling members of our community,” she said.

According to the local Muslim religious officials, the relief food is meant to not only provide nourishment but also uphold the spirit of charity and community, which are core values of Ramadhan.

The initiative has been widely praised, with calls for more support for vulnerable populations beyond Ramadhan. Many in the Muslim community remain hopeful that such efforts will continue in the future.

“The food aid distribution will be carried out fairly to benefit the needy fasting Muslim families. Let us continue praying for peace, unity, and kindness,” Muhammad added.
