Government directs all illegal gas refillers to be shutdown

The Energy Ministry Principal Secretary Alex Wachira has directed all illegal gas refilling without Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPPRA) permits to be shut down, aimed preserving lives.

Speaking in Nanyuki town during the launch of energy saving jikos initiative, where about 2,000 Laikipia residents are expected to benefit, said the Embakasi gas explosion that left people dead and other badly injured was unfortunate and due to illegal gas refilling, which government will no longer allow.

“”Illegal gas refillers lack the necessary capacity and expertise to refill gases properly, this poses significant risks to both consumers and the environment, by targeting these unauthorized refillers, the Ministry aims to safeguard public safety and the integrity of the gas industry,” he said.

The PS revealed that there was an illegal gas refilling in Laikipia, which he directed the local authorities to investigate.

“I am told by EPPRA that there is another illegal establishment in Laikipia and because we don’t want such calamities like Embakasi, we will investigate and if they are not permitted to operate, we will close down the establishment with immediate effect. Not only in Laikipia but all illegal refillers,” said the PS.

Wachira emphasized that the crackdown is necessary to address safety concerns and ensure that consumers receive quality gas refills.

“”It is crucial that we all choose to refill our gases at authorized and regulated dealers to avoid incidents like the one in Embakasi. Let us be vigilant and ensure compliance with safety standards for the sake of our well-being,” said the PS.

Following the directive, Laikipia East Deputy County Commissioner Patrick Muli inspected the Maxxis Nanyuki energy only to find out it had been closed by EPPRA.

Muli said that they cautioned the premises owners not to operate their gas refilling activities, until the matter which is pending in court was resolved.
