The government is constructing a sports ground of international standards at a cost of over Sh 609 million in Kibera Constituency, Nairobi, to be used by sportsmen and women for training.
The Posta Jamuhuri Sports grounds facility located in Woodly along Ngong road which is currently under construction and at 79 percent complete will comprise three football pitches, one rugby pitch, running track, hockey pitch, basketball pitch, handball pitch, children’s playing area, ablution blocks, police houses and a police post, changing rooms, picnic site, a club house, food courts and car park.
Mr Tundura Alganus from the Department of Public Works said the project which is being undertaken by the State Department of Sports and constructed by Dallo Holdings Limited is expected to be complete by the end of June this year.
Alganus who was briefing the County Development Coordination Committee (CDICC) team led by Jane Katuse from the Nairobi County Commissioners office and the Secretary of the Committee Larry Mulomi from the President’s Delivery Unit who were on an inspection tour of the project yesterday, said the plan has included community play fields, a police post, police housing and picnic sites in order to provide accessible sporting and recreational facilities to the general public.
He told the committee that the on-going works had been hampered by the recent heavy rains that caused flooding at the site.
Madam Katuse said the committee was satisfied with the works progress of the facility funded at a cost of Sh 609, 610, 710 and urged the contractor to complete the remaining works within the stipulated time.
The government through the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Heritage are currently upgrading sports facilities in the country to match international standards.
