Speaking at forum, Mrs Wanjau noted that the government has taken steps to empower women to play an active role in the development agenda of the country. She cited Affirmative Action Funds as a purposeful initiative to propel women in the business arena. She also observed that the provision of sanitary towels has helped a lot in retention of girls in school as well as improving their quality of life.
Principal Secretary, State Department of Gender Anne Wang’ombe observed that though the country has made considerable progress on gender issues, a lot needs to be done on Gender Based violence. She decried the rate at which women are killed in families as a major drawback to the gains made. She however lauded the President for appointment of a Taskforce to look into femicide case as a step in the right direction.
State Department for Devolution Principal Secretary, Ms Teresia Mbaika appreciated efforts made in having women in leadership positions both appointive and elective. She pointed out that having seven elected female Governors and several elected women MPs in the two houses of Parliament is not a mean achievement. “We have therefore made good progress since the Beijing Declaration.
