Garissa University re-submits unapproved courses

Garissa University has re-submitted to Commission of University Education (CUE) eight courses which were said not to have been certified for evaluation and accreditation.
Deputy Vice Chancellor Hussein Golicha said contrary to media reports, the courses in question were eight and not ten.
He added that they inherited the courses from Moi University to which they were a constituent college. The courses had been given a seal of approval by the then Moi University Senate.
Prof. Golicha said there was misunderstanding that since the courses were approved by Senate, they presumed that they would automatically continue with them at Garissa University.
The courses included BA Geography with four students, BA Political Science and Public Administration with 14 students, BA Community Development with 39 students, BSc Applied Statistics and Computing with 9 students and BSc Actuarial Science with 50 students.
Prof. Golicha said majority of the said courses have 62 government sponsored students and wondered why they were said to be unapproved courses.
He however urged students to remain calm as they addressed the issue with CUE adding that the highest level in these courses is only second year.
According to an article in a local daily, Commission for University Education (CUE) had rejected 133 courses with a cumulative enrollment capacity of 10,000 slots.
CUE is supposed to approve all the academic programmes taught in local universities.
The article reads in part that ‘of concern is that there are students already studying these programmes who might now be forced to discontinue their studies due to mistakes that are not of their own making’.
Garissa University is alleged to have 10 rejected cases.
