Garissa man, 60, loses eye in hyena attack

A 60 year old man is fighting for his dear life after he was injured by a lone hyena which attacked him in Rahya village in Garissa County.

Abdi Afi Mohamud who was looking after his goats at his farm along River Tana, lost his left eye during the scuffle with the beast.

Addressing the press at the hospital, the victim’s relative Abdikafar Yusuf said the hyena strayed into the goats’ farm within the village and started attacking the herd.

Yusuf said the commotion from the goats attracted the attention of the old man who rushed to the scene, only for the hyena to turn to him instead.

His cries attracted the rest of the villagers who came to his rescue and killed the hyena.

The victim was rushed to Garissa Referral Hospital for treatment where he received blood transfusion after losing a significant amount of blood but he is said to be in a stable condition according to Dr. Hussein Iman, a General Surgeon at the Hospital.

The villagers have called on the Kenya Wildlife Services to compensate them for the loss of their animals, human lives that they have lost to wildlife over time and drive away the animals roaming around human settlements to nearby game reserves.
