Garissa county government has established a fully pledged department headed by a Chief Officer for persons With Disabilities (PWDs) which will deal with their issues in a well-structured manner.
Speaking during the commemoration for the International day for Persons with Disabilities at Garissa primary school ground, Garissa Governor Nathif Jama expressed his commitment to addressing the issues of PWDs and involving them in decision making on matters touching on their welfare.
Jama said that his government has already employed 115 persons with disabilities in various departments and the number is set to increase during future county employment.
“Many of the 115 persons with disabilities we have employed in my government are in senior positions. I believe that together with our development partners we will leave a legacy for being champions for PWDs,” Jama said.
Garissa county commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo on his part discouraged against discrimination for PWDs noting that God in His wisdom created them the way they are.
Mwabudzo pointed out that everyone in this country has a role to play in society despite their physical appearances.
“We have different talents and abilities and so we should be able to get equal opportunities to learn the skills to help in our lives. The rights of the PWDs should be observed and even involve them in government programmes,” Mwabudzo said.
“We have made significant strides in embracing the PWDs over the years, the county and national governments have been considering them for employment opportunities and we also have special funds for them so that they may be able to sustain themselves,” he added.
The county commissioner further cautioned the PWDs against self-pity and encouraged them to grab available opportunities because they are able to achieve success.
