Garissa County Government has terminated casual staff, who had been working at Masalani Water Supply for the last eight (8) years, without their benefits nor the reason for the sacking.
According to their Spokesman whose name is withheld for fear of reprisal 20 casual labourers who included metre readers and guards and office support staff were instructed to vacate the water supply office premises with immediate effect, without being allowed audience with the Director of Water services, Mr Daud Mohamed, who acted under strict instruction from the County Executive for Water (CECM), Ahmed Dagane and the Garissa County Governor, Nathif Jama.
The staff had been operating at the water supply for between the last seven to eight years,
According to the spokesman person, the Garissa County Administration had considered not to directly pay for the water supply electricity bills, leaving the task to the local water station to do so on monthly basis.
“We humbly request our two leaders, Governor Nadhif Jama and Senator Abdul Mohamed Haji who hail from this locality to hear our plight and reinstate as to resume services, the water supply service is understaffed while the urban centres in the Sub-County are expanding very first,” he appealed.
The staff later sought intervention from the County Senator Mr Abdul Mohamed Haji, who promised to consult with the Governor over the matter.
The staff appealed to Governor Jama to allow them back to work, as their families will suffer in poverty as majority of them were sole breadwinners with immense financial obligations.
Efforts by KNA to contact the Masalani water supply coordinator, Mr Noor Mohamed for comments were futile, as his phone went unanswered, while the Senator was in a meeting with elders ahead of public baraza in Masalani and Sangailu divisions in Ijara Constituency, Garissa County.
