What was meant to be a joyous night for two children suddenly turned dark after a lorry tore into their house and cut short their lives.
The children, engrossed in watching television in the evening, were among four people who perished after a lorry ferrying sand crashed into residential houses at Tambaya in Mukurwe-ini, Nyeri County on Wednesday night.
Three of victims died on the spot while the fourth, the lorry driver, passed on while receiving treatment at a local health center.
The 6.30 pm accident happened after the lorry belonging to a construction company repairing the Nyeri-Mukurwe-ini road reportedly hit a pedestrian before losing control and ploughing through the houses.
According to Nyeri County Police Commander, Ali Nuno and eye witnesses, the driver of the ill-fated lorry was speeding.
Nuno described the accident as unfortunate especially coming at a time when the government was implementing a comprehensive programme aimed at reducing deaths on the country roads.
