A form three student died in a grisly road accident after she was knocked by a speeding vehicle near a bridge at Kosiare area along Oyugis Rangwe in Homa Bay County.
The Probox vehicle which was being driven by Julius Otieno Onyango allegedly lost control while trying to negotiate a sharp corner near the bridge before knocking down the student of Dol Secondary School in Rangwe Sub County.
Confirming the 6am incident to KNA, the Homa Bay County Police Commander (CPC), Esther Seroney said that the deceased, Sharon Akinyi Omondi, aged 18, died on the spot and her body has been taken to Rachuonyo South Sub County Hospital awaiting postmortem examination.
Seroney said that the student met her death while walking on the left side of the road, adding that they have launched investigations into the accident.
The officer added that the driver of the vehicle has been arrested and detained at Oyugis police to help police officers with investigations before being arraigned in court and added the vehicle has also been towed to the same station awaiting inspections.
She further appealed to road users to observe the Highway Code and avoid speeding especially on roads which are still under construction in the region, saying the contractor has not erected road signs.
