Football tournament to curb crime, drug abuse

More than 110 youths from Marakwet West Sub County took part in a unique football tournament over the weekend as part of an initiative to reduce crime and drug abuse.

Kapchewes men football and Hosen women emerged victorious in the football tournament funded by nominated Member of County Assembly, Trubena Jemutai Yego.

The finals which was held at Sinon Primary School football field, saw Kapchewes FC clinch a 3-1 victory over Koisangu FC.

The tournament attracted ten teams in Marakwet West Sub County with Koisungu, Hossen men’s teams taking the second and third positions respectively and Kaptabuk women fitting in the second position in women’s group.

Speaking during the event, Yego said that it was through such organized activities the youth will avoid getting into crime and drug use and crime.

She added that if the youths are actively involved in sports they will not have time to engage in certain vices, crime or drugs and substance abuse.

Wisley Kipruto, Kapchesewes FC team captain lauded the MCA for organizing the tournament and called on the government through the Ministry of Youths and Sports Affairs to invest more in sports activities so as to nature talent and give youth a place to focus positively.

“We are happy for this tournament as it has helped us showcase our talents and I urge the government to support us more through such sporting activities,” he said.
