The Football Kenya Federation (FKF), Busia County Women League, kicked off on Sunday with an inaugural match between Bulemia and Siunga at Butula Vocational Training Centre.
The closely contested match that could have gone either way ended in a barren draw as both goalkeepers- Sakina Were (Bulemia) and Everlyn Akoth (Siunga), made daring saves to keep the strikers at bay.
Speaking during the kick-off ceremony, FKF Busia Branch Chairman, Hillary Musundi, said the commencement of the league, which had suffered a delay due to the Coronavirus pandemic, marks a historic achievement for the branch.
“We never had a women league in the County. The kick-off of the 14-team league is a milestone which will reinforce the fact that Busia is the hub of soccer talents,” he said:
Musundi said the Branch has now set focus on initiating a County Youth League, after the ongoing branch and sub branch leagues.
He appealed to parents to give their daughters who are interested in the sport, maximum support to enable them tap their talents, instead of being an obstacle to their talent development.
Musundi challenged the players to have the right attitude and advance their academic careers to avoid language barrier with their coaches.
FKF National Executive Committee Member-In-Charge of Women Football, Margaret Omondi, lauded the branch officials for the bold initiative, stating that Busia is the 29th county to start women’s league.
FKF County Representative, Josephine Oduor, said the launch of the Women League, is a move in the right direction. She disclosed that that Nambale is set to host the next round of the league matches.
Butula Sub-branch Chairman, Boniface Okumu, said six teams from Butula are participating in the women league in addition to 20, which are featuring in the sub branch league.
His Nambale counterpart Salim Suleiman said their main task is to tap talents that have remained wasted at the grassroots.
