Five women in court for abetting FGM

Five  women  appeared before Kapenguria Senior Resident Magistrate (SRM) court on Tuesday accused of aiding and abetting female genital mutilation to 3 girls.

Lodou Lidakong, Chepleke Longolekong and Chemondet Chukatum  were charged that on the 10th October 2019 at Konyerus sub location within West Pokot County, jointly with others not before the court, they procured a woman namely ‘Kochepchumba’ who performed FGM to two girls aged 17 and 16 years.

Also in the same court, Apengole Domo, Gladys Nasimiyu and Chemondet Chukatum were charged that on the same day they procure the same woman to perform FGM to a 14 year old girl.

The  offence of aiding and abetting FGM is contrary to section 20 (b) as read with section 29 of prohibition of FGM Act No 32 of 2011.

Before  the  SRM, Margaret  Nafula all the accused pleaded not guilty and each was released on a bond of Sh.200, 000 with similar surety or a cash bail of Sh.100, 000.

Nafula  further directed for the subjects to be taken to hospital for treatment and thereafter be booked at the Kapenguria child care unit.

The  SRM fixed the case for hearing on November 22, 2019

“I am directing that the three girls be taken to the hospital for treatment as requested by the prosecution, then to Kapenguria child care unit and be produced on the hearing date as witnesses,” said Nafula.
