Five people of the same family died on Sunday night after the vehicle they were travelling in was swept away by raging waters while trying to cross a flooded river at Ngatatoek, Kajiado County.
Confirming the incident, Kajiado County Commissioner (CC), Joshua Nkanatha said the five, a woman, two children, a middle aged man and the driver were travelling in a Nissan Matatu belonging to Nalepo Sacco when the incident occurred.
Nkanatha said the vehicle was swept away after the driver tried to cross a flooded river following heavy rains that pounded the area over the weekend.
The bodies of the five were recovered by residents early Monday morning downstream inside the mangled wreckage of the vehicle.
“We have woken up to sad news this morning, five people who are from the same family died last night after the vehicle they were travelling in was swept away by raging waters after trying to cross a flooded river,” said the CC.
Nkanatha urged motorists and residents to exercise extra caution especially during the rainy season and avoid crossing flooded rivers.
Heavy rains have been pounding various parts of the county since Saturday.

The Department cautioned that the current heavy rains being experienced over several parts of the country will continue until Tuesday.
