Five people died yesterday at the Londiani road junction along the busy Kericho-Nakuru highway when a lorry truck ploughed into six other vehicles including a matatu at a police road block.
The breaks of the lorry which was coming from Nakuru towards Kericho reportedly failed as it approached the police road block thus ramming into six vehicles and killing five people on the spot.
Confirming the accident, Londiani OCPD Mr Musa Kongolo said that five people died on the spot in the accident that involved one truck and six vehicles that included a matatu.
Kongolo said that the victims included three men and two women who died in the accident.
Mr Kongolo said that the accident happened after the breaks of the lorry allegedly failed thus ramming into other six other vehicles which were headed towards Nakuru from Kericho as their occupants were being screened for coronavirus symptoms by health personnel at the police road block.
The Londiani OCPD said that 12 other people were injured and were rushed to Londiani and Kericho County referral hospital where they are undergoing treatment while the wrecked vehicles were towed to Londiani police station. The injured included the truck driver who is now admitted at Kericho referral hospital.
Mr Kongolo said that they have towed the truck to Londiani where police and motor vehicles inspection unit will conduct investigations to ascertain whether there was negligence by the truck driver that could have caused the accident.
