Five people lost their lives Sunday after a four storey building collapsed in Kisii south sub county.
Four more victims were rescued from the site and promptly taken to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) for medical treatment.
According to a police report seen by KNA, a total of nine people believed to have been in the building were accounted for after a rescue operation that lasted for more than seven hours.
The rescue efforts were spearheaded by the Kenya Red Cross Society in collaboration with the police and the County’s Disaster Management team.
Further reports indicated that three survivors of the incident were treated and discharged, while another one is still undergoing treatment.
At the same time, bodies of the deceased persons were moved to the KTRH mortuary awaiting identification and post-mortem.
Condoling with the grieving families, Kisii Governor Simba Arati said investigations into the matter were ongoing, assuring that those found culpable of any negligence would face the full force of the law.
