Fishermen at Sirongo beach in Bondo Sub County woke up to grief and sorrow after one of their colleagues drowned in Lake Victoria.
Evans Odongo Odeyo, 36, was from a fishing expedition together with three others at Kwoyo area of Mageta island when the tragedy befell him at around 5.00am.
According to Sirongo beach management unit chair Mr. William Okello, the four fishermen had just finished their day’s work and were drawing their net when the deceased got accidentally entangled on the neck by a rope on the boat’s sail and fell into the lake waters.
Okello stated that the deceased’s colleagues tried their best to save him but were not successful.
He has therefore pleaded with the beach dwellers to keep vigilant and report to them whenever they find any dead body along the lake beaches.
The beach official regretted that most fishermen have the habit of failing to take precautionary measures even though they have always been warned to put on life saver jackets whenever they go on fishing expeditions.
He has therefore warned that those fishermen who failed to abide by fishing regulations while in the lake shall not be allowed to operate.
