Fisherman dies in Kinda beach, Suba South

A 25-year-old fisherman drowned in Lake Victoria after a fishing boat capsized near Kinda beach in Suba South constituency.

The incident occurred due to heavy windstorms in the waters of Lake Victoria on Friday night.
The deceased identified as Vincent Otieno, drowned while on a fishing expedition with others when their boat overturned after being hit by a strong windstorm following the current heavy downpour in counties bordering the Lake Victoria.
Confirming the incident to KNA, Suba South Beach Management Unit (BMU) chairperson William Onditi said that there were four fishermen in the boat during the incident and three others were rescued by fellow fishermen.
Onditi said that the body of the deceased has not yet been retrieved from the Lake and added they have launched a search operation to retrieve it despite weather challenges.
He appealed to fishermen using waters of Lake Victoria in the region to desist from going to the lake at this time when the meteorological department had issued an alert on heavy rains in the country.
Apart from the incident at Kinda beach, fishermen at Kiwa Island and Kitawa beach both in Suba South are also counting huge loses after 16 boats which were anchored at the lake shore were crashed by strong waves which came as a result of heavy rains in the region.
