A fire burnt down a dormitory in Chemitan Academy in Bureti sub-county, Kericho hours after pupils of the private school reported back from their August holidays.
Confirming the incident, the Bureti Sub County Police Commander (SCPC), Felician Nafula said the Monday inferno broke out at the boys’ dormitory about 7.20pm and spread quickly in the process destroying pupils belongings valued at Sh. 500,000.
Nafula said the fire broke out when the pupils were in class for their preps during which the 50-bed capacity dormitory was razed to the ground.
“Smoke was seen emanating from the boys’ corrugated iron-sheet dormitory and all the pupils’ properties, including books, beds, uniforms and personal effects valued at Sh. 500,000 were destroyed.
No one was however, injured during the fire incident which was put out by members of the public as they waited for the county fire brigade unit.
The cause of the fire was not immediately established with police, saying they have launched investigations.
“Police visited the scene of the fire together with the criminal investigations department team. The scene has been preserved awaiting scenes of crime personnel and further investigations,” added Nafula.
