Several wardens at the King’ong’o Maximum prison in Nyeri are counting losses after a huge fire razed down their homes in the wee hours of Thursday morning.
According to the officer in charge of King’ong’o Maximum prison, Yusuf Kaitopok, seven households lost property of unknown value after a fire broke out in a section of the prison’s staff quarters at 1:30 am on Thursday.
Police in Nyeri have already launched investigations to establish the actual cause of the fire which spread from the closely built houses before the county fire department intervened and contained the situation.
Kaitopok said no one was injured during the incident given that some of the affected occupants were on duty at the time. He noted that some of the wardens were also left without shelter adding that plans were underway to resettle the homeless wardens.
“Luckily, no one got injured during the fire incident. Some of the houses had occupants while in others the occupants were on night duty. We are currently engaging with other partners to see how we can re-accommodate them,” said Kaitopok.
