A boy’s dormitory at Tonga Omonuri Adventist Mixed boarding and day primary school in Nyamaiya division, Nyamira south Sub County was Sunday night reduced to ashes by fire whose cause has not been established.
This raises to two the number of dormitories at the same school to be consumed by fire in the last ten days. The two dorms are very close.
Nyamira Sub County Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Julius Otieno while confirming the incident said a class eight candidate was injured during a stampede that followed and was rushed to Nyamira referral hospital and admitted.
Otieno said property of unknown value including the pupils’ personal effects were destroyed when the 151pupils capacity hostel went up in flames adding the previous fire incident in the same school on 27th, January also destroyed a 150 bed capacity boys’ dormitory with all personal property therein.
“According to the school principal Mr Charles Ombui, the fire started at around 7.45pm while boarders were undertaking their evening studies,” Mr. Otieno explained.
He said they were conducting a probe to ascertain the cause of the fire which he regretted happened at a time when class 8 candidates are preparing for their national examination.
