A section of avocado farmers drawn from Kisii and Nyamira counties have reason to smile after Dagoretti North Legislator Simba Arati provided them with over 18,000 Hass avocado seedlings.
Distributing the seedlings at Motonto village in Bobasi Constituency of Kisii County, the lawmaker said the farmers will reap greatly from the improved variety of avocados.
He urged the farmers to form Saccos at Sub-County level to eliminate brokers who buy the commodity from them at low prices to rake maximum profits.
Beneficiaries Tabitha Momanyi and Samwel Nyabuto lauded the move and promised to embrace the venture with gusto with an eye on higher returns.
Kenya is ranked among the top exporters of avocado whose demand is extremely high in the European and Middle East market. Data from the Horticultural Crops Directorate indicates that Kenya exported 72,000 tonnes of avocado last year up from 59,000 tonnes recorded in the previous year.
