Farmers in Elgeyo Marakwet have been challenged to be proactive in seeking government services to foster economic development.
Speaking in Kapsowar, during a farmers’ cooperative meeting, the chairman Kocholwo farmers’ co-operative society, Edwin Kamoi, noted that with the fast-changing modern trends, farmers should familiarize themselves with emerging issues if they want to cope with challenges.
He said that the national and county governments have employed various strategies in their outreach programs for various sectors such as huduma centers, e-citizen, various departmental websites, and public forums or barazas, which are aimed at giving help and fostering development.
Kamoi noted that individuals should take up these opportunities to look for information that will help them economically.
The chairman stressed the importance of joining cooperative societies or Sacco’s, which are major drivers for economic development.
He added that by joining a cooperative society small-scale producers will be able to pool their resources together for the production of goods or farming so as to get better market prices for their agricultural produce.
He urged them to use the expertise and machinery most government departments have in order to accelerate development, by making use of the agricultural office and agricultural extension officers.
Kamoi added that the youth should take advantage of the youth enterprise development fund as an economic boost to empower themselves economically.
