Police have intensified surveillance along the Nairobi-Mwingi-Garissa highway in a bid to boost security along the major road.
Kitui County Police Commander Antony Kamitu said more road blocks have been erected to secure the road and additional officers deployed along the route.
A multi-agency road block has been put up in Mwingi town.
The road barrier is being manned by both administration and regular police officers, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Department and National Intelligence officers and personnel from the Registrar of Persons office.
The road block according to Kamitu will act as a screening point for people to ensure that criminals are held at bay.
The police boss told a Kitui County National Government Service Deliver meeting chaired by the local County Commissioner Mr. Samuel Kimiti that two other road blocks at Ngutani and near Kanyonyo have also been added in a bid to bolster security.
Kamitu further told the meeting that the officers manning the road blocks will also be expected to enforce the charcoal ban that was imposed by the Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu in February .
He further assured Kitui residents of improved security saying regular police patrols have been stepped up to ensure that peace and tranquility is maintained.
