Elgeyo Marakwet TSC Director urges Teachers to plant trees

As schools reopen for the second term next week, the Elgeyo Marakwet TSC county director Mrs Loice Murei has called on all teachers in the county to take advantage of the rains and make the week a tree planting week.

Noting that tree planting was part of their performance contract, the director called on teachers to teach the young ones the importance of planting trees and taking care of the environment.

Speaking at Singore girls’ high school when she led staff in planting 200 trees, the director said they would also plant a further 200 trees in Sergoit secondary school.

She added that as part of their contribution to the planting of the 15 billion trees, her office would provide 900 seedlings to their staff so that they can extend the exercise to their homes with each staff expected to plant 30 trees.

“We also have 50 fruit tree seedlings which we will give our staff to plant which they can use to get extra income even as they conserve the environment as we all know that wealth is in the environment,” she said.

The principal Singore girls Linet Besi said the school welcomes all who would want to partner with it to plant trees saying last year they planted 2,500 trees adding that the school still has more land for planting.

The director said the county was ready for the reopening of schools saying the county was not affected so much by the rains noting that most schools were habitable.

Mrs. Murei said there were only a few schools whose toilets sunk because of the heavy rains but said they would work with other organisations like the county government and the NG-CDF to have them rebuilt.
