Elephants kill 34-year-old man in Lolgorian, Narok

A 34-year-old man died after he was trampled by elephants while on his way home in the Lolgorian area of Trans Mara South Sub County.

Children who were on their way to school discovered the remains of the man on their way and alerted the neighbours, who later called the police.

Narok County Police Commander Riko Ngare said the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) rangers had established that indeed the man was killed by a herd of elephants from Nyakweri forest.

“Body pieces were found scattered on the scene. They were collected and taken to Trans Mara West Sub County hospital morgue for preservation awaiting postmortem,” he said.

Following the incident, KWS officers and conservancy employees from Mara Triangle are at the area to tame the roaming elephants numbering twelve (12).

The incident comes a few days after an 11-year-old girl was killed by elephants while on her way to school in the Aitong area of Narok West Sub County.

Speaking over the weekend at the Aitong area, the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Ms. Rebecca Miano, reiterated the government’s stand to compensate victims of human-wildlife conflicts on time.

She said the national and county governments are working in collaboration to reduce incidents of the conflicts by ensuring they build more water sources in areas near the Maasai Mara, among others.

There are approximately 2,500 elephants at the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, and during dry seasons, the large animals roam in search of grass and water.

The residents should exercise caution while herding, collecting firewood or going to farm in bushy areas to avoid conflict with wild animals.
