A section of Coast Elders under the ambit of the Coast Restoration Council of Eminent Elders has urged politicians to desist from politicizing the functions of critical security agencies lest the country is exposed to external threats.
They accused the politicians of double standards in addressing national issues and absolved the Director General of the National Intelligence Service Noordin Haji of any wrongdoing in the alleged abductions.
“We don’t support the disappearance of youths because we want when a person is arrested, he or she should be taken to court. We shouldn’t mix politics with national security,” said Sheikh Abu Hamza.
Similar incidents, he added, happened in the Coast region where several youths disappeared without any trace years back but the leaders maintained a deafening silence.
“Why are we having double standards on the same issue? We want to slip the country into chaos and anarchy yet the polls are still far in 2027,” stated the Sheikh.
He added raising political temperatures will impact service delivery and the government may not fulfill its pledges.
They advised the leaders to shun tribalism as the NIS boss was appointed based on his qualifications not on ethnicity or cronyism.
“Tribalism is an enemy of development, let’s put it aside. The office has been occupied by other people before there was no politics. He is competent,” said Rukia Omar.
She added that entrenching tribalism will plunge the country into disasters and the politicians should wait for polls in 2027.
Mohamed Hassan, a Trader at Mackinnon Market called on the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to rein in hatemongers.
He said the Somali community has also lost its youths including the Wajir MCA who was abducted in Nairobi and is still missing.
“NCIC should investigate hate speech. If a normal citizen had made hate speech he could be in jail but why is he still walking scot-free,” stated Hassan.
