Ethics and Ant-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives on Thursday apprehended a chief in Kwale County for soliciting a Sh3, 000 bribe from a woman to facilitate the arbitration of a land dispute.
County Commissioner Mr. Karuku Ngumo confirmed the arrest of chief Joseph Mnyika Chabogo of Mwereni location in LungaLunga Sub-county by the detectives from Mombasa.
He said the officer had demanded the money from the woman in order to facilitate the settlement of a land dispute.
“The Chief was in his office at Mwangulu market where he reportedly received a benefit of Sh3,000 from one Malema Bakari as facilitation fee,” said Mr. Ngumo adding that the culprit will be taken to court once police complete investigations.
He warned all government employees in the region against engaging in corruption and to strictly observe the provisions of chapter six of the Constitution on Integrity and Leadership.
“They must also be guided by the Public Officer Ethics Act in carrying out their duties,” he said.
In November last year, 15 traffic police officers attached to county police headquarters were arrested after they were allegedly found in possession of Sh11,055 suspected to be bribes received from motorists.
