More than 160 students of Nyangweta SDA Mixed High School in South Mugirango in Kisii County escaped death narrowly after their dormitory was razed down by a raging fire Tuesday after they had left for morning preps.
The students, who were in class when the incident occurred, lost property of unknown value amid speculations that it could be an arson attack.
Speaking on phone, Etago Deputy Commissioner Jackson Olechuta said the inferno broke out at the boys’ dormitory at around 4:30am and spread quickly in the process destroying students’ belongings of unknown value.
The administrator added that the fire broke out when the students were in class for their morning preps during which the 160-bed capacity dormitory was razed to the ground.
Olechuta said investigations had since begun and some suspects were already in police custody.
The school’s principal Ms Mary Okemwa declined to comment about the matter. Parents condemned the incident terming it unruly and called for justice.
