Dorcas Rigathi cautions students against drug abuse

The Deputy President’s spouse, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, has cautioned students against engaging in drugs and substance abuse, saying drug addiction has ruined the lives of many young people in the country.

Speaking during a mentorship programme at Kisii School on the outskirts of Kisii town, Mrs Rigathi said there is a need to support the youth who are wallowing in alcoholism and drug abuse.

She underscored the importance of parents providing guidance and counselling to their children at a tender age, so that they grow up in a morally upright way and avoid getting caught up in harmful habits.

Mrs Rigathi, who shared her experiences, while she grew up in a poor neighbourhood, advised the students, not to be mesmerized by their family backgrounds, but instead focus on their education as the key to success.

She urged the students to utilize digital platforms to enhance and sharpen their skills, talents and knowledge and keep-off the negative social media lifestyles.

“As you continue with your journey of learning and growing, ensure that you surround yourselves with positive influencers who can inspire and motivate you,” said Mrs. Rigathi.

She added that she will be visiting more learning institutions around the country, to advocate for the rights of the boy child and ensure recovering addicts are rehabilitated, trained and later provided with job opportunities.

Nyaribari Chache Member of Parliament (MP), Zaheer Jhanda, who accompanied Mrs. Rigathi, promised to improve the school’s infrastructure and support the needy students with school fees through the National Government-Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) kitty.

Other leaders present at the function included Kisii Woman Rep. Dorice Aburi, Kisii County Director of Education, Philip Chirchir, and the host Principal, Fred Mogaka, together with teaching staff from the school.
