The Igembe south base commander Peter Muguro has issued a stern warning to motorists to avoid drinking and driving during this festive season.
With increased travel and celebrations in the season, authorities are urging the public to prioritize safety.
The base commander emphasized that driving under the influence of any drugs or alcohol not only endangers the driver but also poses risk to passengers, pedestrians among other road users.
Speaking to KNA, the officer highlighted the alarming rise in road accidents across the country which has seen too many lives lost or people sustaining severe injuries.
“There have been many cases of accidents as people travel for Christmas celebrations and driving while drunk can worsen the matter as it reduces alertness,” he said adding that alcohol impairs judgement, reduces reaction time hence putting everyone at risk.
Muguro noted that those found driving under the influence among other traffic violations will face severe penalties including licence suspension or even imprisonment.
”If you plan to drink, kindly opt for alternative means of transportation rather than driving and putting your life and other people’s lives at risk,” Muguro said.
He further said that the Christmas holiday is a time of joy and celebrations but it can quickly turn tragic if people, especially motorists are not responsible on the road.
Muguro noted that they have intensified patrols along the busy Maua-Meru Road among other key routes in the region and drivers found under influence will be brought to book.
He said that they are on high alert to ensure the safety of residents, noting that markets are bustling and transport services are in high demand hence the need for tight security.
