The national government through the ministry of education has started the year 2021 distribution of sanitary towels to primary school pupils across the country.
Bungoma South sub county Director of Education Mr. Harguey Sedion Ong’ijo said already Bungoma county education office has received the sanitary towels which are being distributed to schools across the region.
“We have received sanitary towels for public primary school children. The pads are being distributed now and this distribution is not only here but the whole country,” he said.
Ong’ijo revealed that the pads are being distributed in all sub counties in different quantities depending on the population of the pupils.
However, he said that the main challenge they face as an office was the level of poverty which forced some pupils to share out their pads with their family members and friends who are not in school.
Nevertheless, he thanked the national government for being consistent in giving out the sanitary towels. “There are challenges but one thing I want to thank the government for is that they are consistent in distributing the pads and did not stop even during the Covid 19 break,” he remarked.
He called upon teachers to identify the pupils who have a problem keeping the pads and do so for them in school.
Speaking to KNA, Bungoma DEB school head teacher Mrs. Olivia Abel who is in charge of the distribution said the pads had retained the girl child in class.
She said the pads are given to girls in classes 5,6,7 and 8 starting with those from very poor backgrounds.
