National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya (NFDK) Monday donated devices and cheques worth over Sh5 million to the persons with disability in Western region.
The cheques worth Sh4.2 million were issued to 18 special learning institutions while assistive devices and tools of trade worth about Sh0.86 million were given to 46 individuals in Shinyalu and Malava Sub Counties.
A member of the Board of Trustees Prof. Julia Ojiambo said at the end of the exercise, over Sh10 million will have been spent in the four counties of the former western province.
She advised the beneficiaries to take good care of the devices which included wheel chairs and crutches and as well use the tools of trade among them sewing machines, saloon kits, wielding machines, masonry kits and water pumps to uplift their living standards.
“The NFDK has so far funded seven projects which include classrooms and establishing income generating activities to the tune of Sh17.3 million in the region,” she said, adding that four other projects worth Sh9.9 million are ongoing.
She stated that NFDK aims at enhancing socio-economic empowerment for the physically challenged for a just and equal society.
Former nominated Member of Parliament Josephine Sinyo, who represents Attorney General’s office in the board, said disability, is not condemnation but a challenge that has to be taken positively.
“There are so many people living with disabilities who are professionals in various fields and leading successful lives,” she observed
