Floods and running water have broken banks of Jila and Ndigiria dams spilling water towards Bamba town in Ganze Sub County, Kilifi County.
Director of public service and disaster management in Kilifi County Mr. Joshua Malingi said the situation might be contained after a three days stop of the rains adding that he has visited a number of affected areas to ascertain damages.
He said over 200 families in Madunguni, Garashi and Kavunya Lalo have been moved to higher grounds after river Sabaki broke its banks and spilled over peoples’ homes and farms.
Malingi said some of the affected families are camping at Garashi chief’s camp from where relief food will be supplied, thanking the Kenya Red Cross for taking immediate action to assist the victims.
“There have been no reported cases of deaths since the rains started but the damages to crops of unestimated value is visible. We are now taking a technical team to the ground to access the damages caused by the floods so far,” he said.
Malingi who was chairing a brief County Steering Group (CSG) meeting at the Tusky’s Boardroom prayed that the rains will stop for some time to allow relief food supplies to be taken to the victims.
The CSG identified some members who will divide themselves into three groups to move to the ground and assess the situation before presenting their findings next week.
