CS Ogamba calls for more research to address challenges

The focus in the country should be on research in order to address the different challenges facing the nation in areas such as food security, education systems, health care, manufacturing, and climate change, among others.

Education Cabinet Secretary, Julius Migos Ogamba says it is through research that we uncover new knowledge, develop ground-breaking technologies, and find solutions to challenges facing society, ultimately contributing to a brighter and more prosperous future for all.

In a speech read on his behalf by Fredrick Ndambuki, Secretary, of Education, during the closing ceremony of the Kenya National Research Festival (KNRF), the CS noted that, recognised globally, Research, Science, Technology, and Innovation (RSTI) is essential for social and economic development and, more importantly, central to competitiveness in an increasingly globalised and knowledge-based world.

Ogamba said the rapid industrialisation of Southeast countries, is largely attributed to the focus on the utilisation of Research, Science, and Technology and Kenya is no exception in harnessing the RSTI value proposition for youth empowerment and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) delivery.

He explained that the inaugural NRF, proposed to be held annually, holds great significance as it not only showcases the ground-breaking discoveries and innovations of researchers but also serves as a catalyst for collaboration, dialogue, and collective action.

“This is a platform where ideas are born, partnerships are forged, and the potential of research to drive positive change is fully realized,”  he noted.

He commended the Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) for hosting the exhibition that brought together over 1000 students from 390 schools across the 47 counties, both physically and virtually, saying they have provided a remarkable platform for showcasing and competing in Science, Technology, Innovation, and Research projects.

”The festival provides a unique platform for Kenyan youth from every corner of this country to demonstrate their capacity for innovation and research as well as showcase their scientific talents. We applaud YSK’s dedication and efforts, which have significantly enriched the festival and inspired the next generation of scientists and  innovators,” the CS said.

The week-long festival, Ogamba added, has been a remarkable journey of learning and collaboration, marked by enriching learning sessions and dynamic exhibitions in all scientific fields.

The CS went ahead and lauded the outstanding researchers who were honoured for their remarkable achievements and who have excelled despite the enormous challenges faced by developing countries like Kenya, in the research arena.

“To all the outstanding researchers, young innovators, and awardees recognised today, your remarkable contributions to the fields of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) are a testament to your dedication, creativity, and tireless efforts. You have not only advanced the frontiers of knowledge but have also set a new standard for excellence in research,”  the CS said.

The CS further thanked partners who played a crucial role in fostering innovation, promoting knowledge-sharing among the research community, and supporting the event both financially and in kind.

The NRF is mandated to facilitate research in science, technology, and innovation, support scientific research and innovation, and compile and maintain a national database of research and innovation in Kenya.
