Education Cabinet Secretary. Ezekiel Machogu has sent a message of condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of Kenyatta University Students who lost their lives in a tragic road accident at Maungu in Taita-Taveta County.
“Our hearts are heavy with grief, as we mourn the tragic loss of young precious lives in a road accident involving students who were on a study trip to the Coast. Our thoughts are with many others who were injured,” said Machogu.
The students who were being ferried to Mombasa by a Kenyatta University bus were involved in an accident with a truck on Monday night.
Machogu who wished those injured quick recovery, said the ministry will keep on updating the public and families of those affected with information during this difficult time as soon as they gather all the necessary details surrounding the tragic event.
In a press statement sent to newsrooms, the CS termed the tragedy a devastating moment for the entre Kenyatta University community, and the larger education community, and assured that the Ministry will provide all the necessary support to those affected.
“Let us come together to offer, comfort, strength and compassion to one another as we navigate through this profound loss,” urged Machogu.
He at the same time assured that the Ministry will ensure the safety and well-being of all students, as it closely examines how such accidents can be prevented from happening in future.
Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Prof Paul Wainaina also sent a message of condolences on behalf of the University Council and the University Management Board to the families of those who perished in the accident.
“Kenyatta University is deeply saddened by the tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the affected families,” said the Vice Chancellor.
Prof Wainaina said the University has set up a Help Desk at Business Students Services Centre Room 151 and Mobile No. 020 2310709 or 0723352483 where queries will be responded to, as the institutions offers support and assistance during this challenging time.
He said the institution dispatched a team from the Main Campus and Mombasa Campus to the accident scene on Monday night to assess the situation, assist survivors and provide accurate report.
“The team included two doctors, medical personnel, University security officers, as well as students’ and staff wellness officers,” he said, adding that some of the injured students are in the process of assessment for possible evacuation to Nairobi depending on their status.
He assured that the University will provide a more comprehensive report as information becomes available.
Prof Wainaina said the University is not able to share the specific numbers and names but can confirm there are several fatalities involved.
