The Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports Ababu Namwamba has announced that the Ministry has allocated two hundred and fifty million shillings for the upgrade of the Mbaraki Sports Ground, Mombasa.
At a groundbreaking ceremony held at the grounds, the CS expressed that the enhancement project will significantly contribute to talent development; a key priority for the Kenyan Government. This initiative underscores their commitment to integrating youth into sports development efforts.
Ababu noted that the Coastal counties collectively serve as the backbone of the Tourism Sector which significantly contributes greatly to the Country’s economy, making it imperative and justifiable to prioritize the region’s development for the advancement of the Nation.
“The coastal region, particularly Mombasa, continues to showcase itself as a hotbed of talent. Last week’s victory over Gor Mahia further exemplified this fact, so it’s fair to say you have a remedy for conquering K’Ogalo,” Ababu said.
He added by pledging his unwavering commitment to the completion of the stadium which had been delayed for a decade.
Namwamba enlightened that the project will be undertaken in phases, with specific attention given to various aspects. The focus will include upgrading the racing track, refurbishing the playing pitch, upgrading the fans’ terraces, and planning for a dedicated pavilion.
“Despite the stadium’s relatively modest size of approximately three acres, meticulous planning aims to transform this ground into a proud landmark venue” the CS added.
At the same time, CS Ababu commended KPA for their undivided support in nurturing talent not only in football but also in other sports too. He urged the management to ensure that in their next financial budget, they set aside more funds for the ongoing construction at Mbaraki grounds.
The General Manager of Kenya Ports Authority, Sudi Mwasinago said that the collaborative initiative can create a vibrant sports ecosystem that nurtures talents, promotes healthy competition, and instills a sense of national pride.
“The upgrading of the KPA Mbaraki sports club is a testament to our collective dedication to excellence and I believe in the power of sports to unite us and inspire future generations” he concluded.
