Individuals who chose to undergo the 14 day compulsory quarantine in private hotels will be required to pay the bills they incurred during their stay.
Government Spokesperson Col. (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna said it has come to the attention of the government that some individuals who opted to stay at PrideInn Chain of hotels in Nairobi, which include Lantana, Azzure and Raphta have declined to pay their bills.
He said when the compulsory quarantine commenced, all the affected persons had been given an option to choose between government owned facilities and private hotels, a decision that was based on preferences and the ability to pay.
“The government shall not be held responsible for bills incurred out of choice by an individual or individuals, as those who chose to be in a private facility had entered into a private arrangement with the hotels,” said Oguna.
In a press statement sent to newsrooms, the Government Spokesperson said that after the 14 day compulsory quarantine, all the individuals were to undergo tests for the Covid-19 disease, and those who turned positive were to undergo another 14 day quarantine period at their own cost.
He said individuals staying at PrideInn Lantana failed to observe the quarantine protocol, a reason that led some of them to test positive for coronavirus, thereby necessitating the additional 14 day quarantine.
“At that time, the individuals still had the option to move to the government facilities or remain in the private owned ones but chose to remain in the hotels,” he added.
Oguna noted that the additional quarantine period was necessary to protect the rest of the society from contracting the disease.
