Court plants trees to commemorate Open Day

The Environment and Land Court in Embu marked its open-day this year by planting over 1, 000 trees at Kangaru DEB Primary School in Embu West Sub-county.

The open-day themed “Enhancing Land and Environmental Justice Dialogue” was preceded by a procession march by judicial officers from the Embu Law Courts in conjunction with other stakeholders.

Environment and Land Court Judge Antony Kaniaru, who led the exercise, said this was part of their contribution towards the government’s vision of planting 15 billion trees by the year 2032.

He emphasised the importance of environmental conservation through tree planting and growing, saying, “Everybody can see what is happening in this country, particularly concerning the floods taking place and other environmental challenges, all because we have not been paying keen interest to our environment.”

Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) official Daniel Karuri said, in conjunction with other players in the justice process, they will work to ensure acts of environmental degradation, such as illegal logging, are stamped out to safeguard the environment.

Kenya Forest Service (KFS) Officer Mercy Macharia encouraged residents to heed the government’s call to embrace the culture of tree-growing to boost the country’s tree cover.
