Court hands man 150 years for killing three children

A Bomet court has sentenced a 40-year-old man to 150 years in prison after finding him guilty of murdering his three children in 2019. The murder incident happened in Lelaitich village, Chepalungu Sub County.

Benard Kirui was found guilty of killing his three sons—Amos Kipngetich (12), Vincent Kiprotich (8), and Emanuel Kipronoh (5)—while their mother was away from home.

Justice Ng’arng’ar described the crime as “inhuman and shocking,” while emphasising the gravity of the offense, calling for the need for a harsh penalty to prevent similar incidents in the future.

He noted that the brutal nature of the act, which involved the killing of innocent children by their own father, was beyond comprehension and could not be taken lightly.

“This court cannot overlook such a grievous act. The punishment must reflect the severity of the crime committed against the innocent souls,” he stated.

The judge further stressed that such heinous crimes deeply affected families and society at large, warranting a punishment that not only held the perpetrator accountable but also served as a strong warning to others who might contemplate such actions.

He opined that imposing a severe sentence, the court aimed to reinforce the importance of child protection and uphold justice for the young victims whose lives were tragically cut short.

With Kirui given 14 days to appeal the sentence, the children’s mother, Sharon Cherono, expressed her relief and satisfaction with the court’s decision.

“Justice has finally been served,” Cherono stated, adding that the ruling brought a sense of closure after years of pain and grief.

She emphasized the devastating impact of losing her three children and hoped that the sentence would serve as a warning against such inhumane acts.
