Kakamega county directorate of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) has pledged to support the potters of Ilesi area in Shinyalu Sub County in enhancing their skills.
The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Dr George Lutomia said the craftsmen, popularly known as potters of Ilesi, would be allowed to enroll for free in the local polytechnics and home craft centres for requisite training.
Dr Lutomia disclosed that plans are underway for setting up a kitty for funding the craftsmen.
He said this after visiting the potters who are based at Ilesi area, in Isukha West location of Shinyalu Sub-County on Monday.
The crafts work is an age-old business of the residents in this area who come up with a wide range of aesthetic artifacts including pots and sculptures.
Dr Lutomia noted that home craft centres can easily lead to flourishing of cottage industries and hence promote the growth of the informal sector.
The County TVET Director Chrispinus Wamalwa said they will work towards promotion of partnerships and linkages of the crafts work to other sectors such as tourism and industrialisation.
