County launches free maize seed distribution exercise

The County Government of Trans Nzoia has launched a free maize seed distribution exercise in a bid to boost production.

Speaking during the launch of the exercise dubbed ‘Fukuza Njaa Initiative on Wednesday’, Governor George Natembeya said the move is among the many strategies his Government has put in place to enhance food security.

Under the ‘Fukuza Njaa Initiative’, Natembeya said more than 103,000 small-scale farmers are expected to benefit.

Noting that the initiative will play a critical role in the revival of the agricultural sector, the Governor revealed that Sh100 million has been set aside for the exercise.

Natembeya urged farmers to embrace the best agricultural practices which will help improve harvest, pointing out correct timing as a critical component.

He promised to work closely with Members of County Assembly to increase fertilizer distribution.

The area MCA Martin Jamanoor present during the launch welcomed the ‘Fukuza Njaa Initiative’ terming it as a timely intervention which will go a long way to address food security.

“This program has come at the right time and it will be of great benefit to our farmers. We promise to work closely with our Governor to make the program a success,” he said.

Others present during the exercise were County Secretary Truphosa Amere, County Executive Committee Members Phanice Khatundi (Agriculture), Chanelle Kittony (Sports) and Dr. Pepela Wanjala (Health and Sanitation).
