Laikipia County government has partnered with Habitat for Humanity Kenya to provide water to residents by sinking boreholes in semi-arid areas and also provide affordable infrastructure to public institutions and vulnerable households in the area.
While signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the Non-Governmental Organization at his Nanyuki office on Tuesday, Laikipia governor Joshua Irungu said that Habitat for Humanity Kenya had committed to undertake drilling of boreholes for the provision of water for domestic use that will be solar powered.
“We have also discussed the other area of partnership and that is housing which is also a key agenda for the National government where we shall seek to improve infrastructure in dilapidated institutions of learning as well as putting up decent homes to vulnerable households.
Habitat for Humanity Kenya director Koome Kiragu said that his organization had invested over Sh. 100 million in Laikipia County on various charitable projects in the last five years.
“We have seen the construction of 76 decent houses for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and vulnerable groups. We have also constructed an equivalent number of toilets and installed rainwater harvesting tanks in homes,” Kiragu said.
He added that Habitat for Humanity Kenya was looking forward to working with other county governments in order to enable low-income families to access decent and affordable shelter.
“Under this partnership with Laikipia County Government, my organization will undertake the implementation of improved basic infrastructures and services for decent settlement as an integrated project focusing on water, construction, training of masons, livelihoods training, and school infrastructure,” Kiragu further added.
Habitat for Humanity Kenya has built eight classrooms at Mbombo primary school in Ol Moran, Kirima sub location, an administration block, for classrooms, and a computer room at Mukima secondary school.
Some 10,000-liter water and three classrooms recently constructed by the organization at Naibor primary school in Laikipia North Sub County were handed over to the county government after the MoU was signed on Tuesday.
