Makueni County Government through the Department of ICT, Education and Internship, has embarked on a programme aimed at capacity-building Board of Governors and managers with skills in all the Vocational Training Centres (VTC) in an effort to enhance governance and service delivery.
Through the initiative, a board chairperson and a manager drawn from each of the 61 VTCs were equipped with vital skills in governance, financial management, asset management, human resource practices, legal compliance and curriculum development.
Speaking while officiating the induction event at Wote Technical Training College on Saturday, the Executive Committee Member (CECM) Department of ICT, Education and Internship Elizabeth Muli reminded the managers and chairpersons that their leadership and stewardship were critical in improving the VTCs across the county.
“You have been entrusted with a noble responsibility because of your experience, your integrity and your ability to lead. Your selection is not an accident; it is a deliberate action rooted in our belief in inclusive grassroot-led development,” said Ms. Muli.
“Your leadership and stewardship will be critical in shaping the future of VTCs in Makueni County,” she observed.
Further, the CECM challenged board chairpersons to embrace their mandate with diligence and passion while urging them to be custodians of quality and relevance to the emerging technologies and socio-economic development agenda.
Also, she told them to ensure they uphold transparency in resource allocation and guard institutions against mismanagement saying this needs visionary leadership and sound governance of the board members.
“Your role is vital; it is about strategy and service. Ensure the curriculum is aligned to market trends, emerging technologies and the county’s socio-economic development agenda,” said the CECM.
Consequently, Ms. Muli said that VTCs were expected to offer opportunities to the people to acquire skills, create livelihoods and drive innovation across various actors in the county.
“Through this, we are preparing our people for industry-ready trades such as construction, automobile repair and garment making; technological innovation and digital skill; entrepreneurship and self-employment, especially in our rural peri-urban communities,” said Muli.
Present at the function included CECM Devolution Nicholas Nzioka, Governor’s Political Advisor Kiilu Kasamba, Makueni County Public Service Board CEO Redempta Kavindu, Finance Docket’s John Nguni, Education Chief Officer Irene Makau, Director of Procurement Fidel Muema and Human Resource Director Evelyn Mueni, among others.
