Companies start operating in Tatu city

More than 70 companies have opened businesses at Tatu City, a mixed-use development economic zone in Kiambu County, boosting economic growth in the area.

Tatu City Country Head Preston Mendenhall said the companies range from Kenyan Champion brands to E-commerce brands, Extreme large scale and Real Disruptive brands.

Among the companies, he said include Cooper, Kopier, Twiga foods, among several others.

He said significant progress has been made to attract more investment of leading Kenyan companies, new entrants into the market and foreign direct investments at the city.

“We have laid the groundwork of setting up the necessary infrastructure. We have dozens of companies set to come into Tatu in the coming months. It’s now for investors and those wishing to own homes to make a move,” he said.

Mendenhall also revealed that Sh20 billion has been used into developing infrastructure in the area so as to attract more investment.

He said the funds were used to put up several kilometers of tarmac, sewerage, water, underground power lines, ICT cabling among other infrastructure in areas earmarked for estates and industry.

He cited Kijani Ridge, one of the premier residential projects which he said has Sh1 billion worth of infrastructure development projects.

“We have completed 6km of tarmacked roads, 12 km of footpaths, 5 km of underground piped storm water network, 5 km of water supply pipeline, 2.7 km of sewer lines, 12km of fiber optic cabling, and 9.5km of 11kV medium voltage underground power lines,” he said.

While lauding the government support in infrastructural development and investor linkages, he said they expected more growth in investments in the coming months, leading to the country’s economic growth.

He added that they are open to working with county governments to help them develop their investments.

“We have been partnering with Konza City to enhance investments. We shall also partner with other economic zones that will come up,” he said.

Tatu City Head of Sales David Karimi said they have more than 3,000 investors who have constructed homes at their premier residential projects of Kijani Ridge, Homes and Lifestyle Heights zones.

He added that from the 650 plots at the residential projects, already 550 have been sold and the construction of 200 housing units is at an advanced stage.

He noted that land value in the area has shot up by 128 per cent owing to the infrastructure set up in the area.

“The property which was going for Sh12.8 million last year, is now selling at Sh 28 million, almost 128 per cent increase. It is set to rise further if more investments come up,” said Karimi.

Tatu City is building on 5,000 acres, with mixed-use developments, including homes, schools, offices, medical centres, nature parks, sport and entertainment complex and manufacturing for more than 250,000 residents and 30,000 day visitors.
