Committee promises seamless transfer of power

The Assumption of Office of the Governor Committee in Garissa County has called on the area residents to maintain peace and promised a seamless transition of power to the Governor – Elect.

The Committee consists of the County Secretary who is the Chair, County Commissioner and county top security officials, several chief officers, clerk of the County Assembly, representatives from the Judiciary and Ministry of Devolution, and two representatives nominated by the Governor-Elect.

Speaking after chairing a session, today, County Secretary, Abdi Sheikh, said that the handing over will be done gradually as required by law.

“There was an election on August 9, 2022 and we have a new Governor-Elect and Deputy Governor-Elect and there is an outgoing governor who has conceded defeat. This Committee will coordinate the inaugural event of the swearing in of the new leadership which will happen at the Garissa Primary School grounds on a date to which will be communicated,” Sheikh said.

“The County Government is still working and the service delivery will continue as usual with no interruptions. We are going to invite all the residents to the swearing in ceremony which we hope will be seamless and peaceful,” he added.

Garissa Township Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Solomon Chesut assured the residents of adequate security during the handover celebrations.

“We want to assure our residents that our security agents have heightened the security in the entire County. We are very grateful to the members of the public that so far have maintained peace during the whole electioneering period,” Chesut said.

“We are assuring our residents and even the entire country that Garissa County has a special challenge given the security issues we have, but our security officers are up to the task. We know the enemy might be there, but we are not giving any chances, we are ahead of things,” he added.

Former Garissa Governor, Nathif Jama, was re-elected on the just ended elections defeating incumbent, Ali Korane.

He will be sworn in with his Deputy, Abdi Dagane, who is also the current Deputy for the outgoing Governor, Ali Korane.
