Committee formed to oversee resettlement of Kisumu traders

The City management of Kisumu has established a twelve member committee to oversee relocation of traders from the streets to the ultra-modern Uhuru Business Park.

Kisumu Acting City Manager Abala Wanga in a notice directed the market management committee to ensure fairness in the allocation of space at the new market as the county government moves to enforce a ban on street hawking and vending.

The committee comprises representatives from Apindi Street, Nyamlori market, Garissa Lodge and Winam booksellers, person’s with disability, special interest groups, the youth and civil society.

The Sh. 500 million Uhuru Business Park was constructed by the national government to help the county government resettle the more than 10, 000 small traders who were displaced to pave way for the upgrade of Kisumu Port and modernization of the city aesthetics.

The interim committee according to the notice will also oversee the management of the new market for a period of twelve months.

The County Government, he said, was committed to creating a conducive environment to operate in dignified spaces.

This, he said, was demonstrated in the massive investments the county government has put into the development of modern markets.
