North Eastern regional commissioner John Otieno has commended security agencies in the region for their dedication to duty that has thwarted several planned Al-Shabaab terror attacks in the area.
Otieno said there are a number of would-be attacks by the Somali based terror groups that have been neutralized by “our gallant’ security agencies which go unreported.’’
“Our security agencies have done tremendously to secure this region. Several planned attacks have been thwarted. If it were not for our dedicated multi agency security teams, we would have witnessed more attacks than what we are experiencing now,” Otieno said.
The regional commissioner also commended the public for volunteering credible information that has helped the security officers stop the attacks.
He said that the government has put in place the necessary measures in terms of security strategies to secure the region.
Otieno was however quick to note that terror threats that continue to be posed by the militants remain a major concern for the government.
The administrator was addressing the media at the Garissa government guest house after officially opening a one-day public participation forum on the national government village elders’ policy and regulations for the establishment of administration units.
He said village elders have continued to play a significant role in matters security noting that the mainstream national government administration structure will help in enhancing security by way of getting firsthand information from the village elders through the chiefs.
Otieno who was flanked by the regional security team said that the most challenging areas are in Mandera and Fafi sub-county in Garissa County.
He however noted that the government was making major undertakings in the areas in a bid to enhance security.
On the government key projects that have come under attack from the militants that have in some instances resulted in casualties, Otieno said that the government has put in place the necessary plans to secure the contractors.
He singled out the Northern corridor project that runs from Isiolo to Mandera describing it as a critical project that the government has taken a lot of interest to secure.
